Getting Started

What tax year does AirGapTax cover?

The AirGapTax 2026 edition covers tax year 2026 (returns filed in 2027). It computes your federal Form 1040, all schedules, and all major credits and deductions for the 2026 tax year using IRS-published 2026 rates, brackets, and thresholds.

How do I install AirGapTax?

Download the installer for your platform from the Download page. On macOS, open the .dmg and drag AirGapTax to Applications. On Windows, run the .msi or .exe installer. On Linux, make the .AppImage executable and run it.

Does AirGapTax require an internet connection?

Not for tax computation. All calculations and filing packet generation run offline. If you choose to enable optional external AI backends (Groq, custom endpoints), those will use the network. The local agent server and Ollama chat run on 127.0.0.1 (your own machine).

Is the Free tier really free?

Yes. No credit card. No signup. Just download and file. The Free tier covers W-2 income with the standard deduction — suitable for straightforward single or married filing jointly returns.

License Keys

I purchased but haven't received my license key.

Your key is emailed immediately after payment. Check your spam/junk folder. If you still don't see it after 15 minutes, email [email protected] with your order email address and we'll resend it.

How many devices can I use my license on?

Each license covers up to 3 devices — all your own machines. If you need more, contact support.

How do I enter my license key?

During AirGapTax onboarding, you'll reach an "Activate your license" screen. Select your tier, enter your key (format: TV1-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX), and click Validate. The app validates the key locally — no internet required.

What if I lose my key?

Email [email protected] from the address you used at purchase. We'll look it up and resend.

Does my license expire?

No. Your 2026 edition license never expires — you can use AirGapTax 2026 on your machines forever. Each new tax year gets its own edition.

Filing & Returns

Does AirGapTax file my return for me?

AirGapTax generates a complete, IRS-ready paper filing packet. You print it, sign it, and mail it to the IRS. Complete, Pro, and Elite tiers also produce a draft XML export that authorized e-file providers can submit on your behalf. AirGapTax does not transmit your data to the IRS directly — direct-to-IRS e-file (IRS Modernized e-File / MeF) requires ETIN/EFIN approval, which we do not have at launch.

What forms and schedules are supported?

Form 1040, Schedule A (itemized deductions), Schedule B (interest and dividends), Schedule C (self-employment), Schedule D + Form 8949 (capital gains), Schedule SE (self-employment tax), and major credits including EITC, Child Tax Credit, Child & Dependent Care, Education Credits, and more. W-2, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B, 1099-R, SSA-1099, and 1099-G are all supported.

Is crypto supported?

Yes. The Complete and Pro tiers support Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, and Gemini CSV exports. AirGapTax computes gain/loss, tracks wash sales, and generates the Form 8949 rows needed for Schedule D.

Is AirGapTax tax advice?

No. AirGapTax is tax computation software. It performs math. It does not advise, recommend, or opine on your tax situation. All outputs are drafts that you must verify before filing. Consult a licensed CPA, enrolled agent, or tax attorney for advice. See our Terms of Service.

What if the IRS audits me?

AirGapTax provides no protection against IRS audits. You are responsible for the accuracy of your return. Review every line of your output before signing. If you're audited, you'll need a tax professional — AirGapTax cannot assist with audit representation. See Section 7 of our Terms of Service.

Privacy & Security

Where is my tax data stored?

On your computer. Only on your computer. AirGapTax never transmits your tax data anywhere. There are no servers that receive your financial information. See our Privacy Policy.

Does AirGapTax have telemetry or analytics?

No. Zero telemetry. Zero analytics. No crash reports sent anywhere. All tax computation runs locally with no network calls.

What about AI features — do they use the network?

The built-in AI assistant (Tier 0) works entirely offline with no network calls. If you choose to enable an optional external AI backend (such as Groq, Ollama, or a custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint), your chat messages — which may include tax context like AGI or refund amounts — will be sent to the service you configure. External AI is strictly opt-in and can be disabled at any time.

What is the local agent server?

AirGapTax includes an optional HTTP server that runs on 127.0.0.1 (your loopback address). It exposes a local API so AI assistants like Ollama can query your tax data in context. This server only runs when you explicitly enable it, and it cannot be accessed from outside your machine.

Payments & Refunds

What payment methods are accepted?

Credit and debit cards via Stripe, with PayPal, Dodo Payments, and BTCPay Server (Bitcoin) available as backup processors via automatic failover. Bitcoin payments via BTCPay require no KYC or account creation.

Are refunds available?

All sales are final and non-refundable. This is a digital software product delivered immediately upon purchase. Please review the features page carefully and try the Free tier before purchasing. See Section 5 of our Terms of Service.

Do I have to buy a new edition every year?

Only if you want to file the next tax year's return. Each edition is a single-tax-year license — your 2026 edition files 2026 returns forever. To file 2027 returns next year, you'll need the 2027 edition. Existing owners get 50% off the next year's edition.
